Chairs and fists fly at Higher Education Convention in Midrand

A fight has broke out between the EFF student formation and Fees Must Fall Movements at the Higher Education Convention taking place in Midrand. The event started with incidents of hackling and disruptions on Saturday morning.

The convention is attended by different political student formations, politicians and academics to discuss the funding of higher education.

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande was hackled by some students when he entered the venue.

A few minutes later a confrontation started between the EFF student formation and Fees Must Fall group, resulting in the throwing of chairs.

Nzimande was escorted away from the premises. Chairs were thrown at the podium.

Challenges facing tertiary institutions, including the demand for free and decolonised higher education, are in the spotlight at the convention.

At the moment the proceedings have been temporarily suspended. The Convention was organized by former Constitutional Court Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke.
